About this product

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC Wheelie is a 34-liter travel bag designed to meet the carry-on size requirements of most smaller aircraft, measuring 53cm long, 33cm wide, and 20cm deep. It weighs 2.93kg and is built from 300-denier recycled polyester with a 200-denier recycled polyester secondary fabric and a recycled TPU-film laminate for durability and weather resistance. Robust wheels and a telescoping handle make it easy to roll through airports, while tuck-away shoulder straps convert it into a backpack when navigating rougher terrain. Backup wheel axles are stored within the frame for on-the-go repairs. Organization is handled by an external front stash pocket for quick-access items and internal mesh pockets for keeping gear sorted. The bag has no hip belt and no ventilated back panel, keeping the design streamlined for travel. Produced in Viet Nam at a Fair Trade Certified factory, it also carries Bluesign approved materials certification, reflecting its recycled-materials construction.

What people are saying

Reviewers consistently praise the Patagonia Black Hole MLC Wheelie for its impressive carry versatility, noting that it functions well as a wheeled duffel, a backpack, and a shoulder carry option in one compact, carry-on-compliant package. The durable, weather-resistant recycled fabric and typical Patagonia build quality earn frequent compliments, and several users highlight that the backpack mode is "surprisingly comfortable" compared to other hybrid wheeled bags. The most common criticisms center on the bag feeling stiff and heavy relative to its 34L capacity, which some say limits usable interior volume. A recurring concern is that the shoulder straps, while cleverly hidden, lack adequate padding and structure when the bag is fully loaded, making extended backpack carry uncomfortable for some users. The premium price point is also noted as a barrier.
