About this product

The Rab Alpine 800 is a tapered mummy sleeping bag rated to a sleep limit of -16 degrees C (5 degrees F), making it a capable choice for cold-weather mountaineering, alpinism, trekking, and winter backpacking. It is filled with 800g of 650-fill-power European duck down treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic finish to help maintain loft in damp conditions. The outer shell is a 20D Pertex Quantum nylon ripstop (36gsm) with a fluorocarbon-free DWR coating, while the lining is a 20D recycled nylon (38gsm). Trapezoidal boxwall baffles with a differential cut allow the down to fully loft, and a chevron baffle pattern on the upper torso reduces down migration. A 3D-shaped down-filled neck collar and a down-filled baffle along the three-quarter-length YKK zip both help seal in warmth. The Regular version fits users up to 185cm (72.8in) and packs down to 45cm by 28cm at a weight of approximately 1,260g. The Long extends to a 230cm bag length for users up to 200cm. Both sizes include a drawcord stuff sack and a zipped cotton storage sack. The bag is hand-filled in Derbyshire, UK.

What people are saying

Reviewers consistently praise the Rab Alpine 800 for its impressive warmth-to-weight ratio, making it stand out among winter-rated sleeping bags under 1.3 kg. The Pertex Quantum shell, Nikwax hydrophobic down treatment, and trapezoid boxwall baffle construction earn repeated compliments for keeping the bag performing well in damp and windy conditions. Its packability and comfortable, soft lining are also frequently highlighted as strengths. The most common criticisms center on the 650 fill power duck down, which is considered a lower grade than competitors at a similar price, meaning cold sleepers or those pushing toward the -16C limit may find it underwhelming. Several reviewers flag the included stuff sack as basic and lacking compression straps. One tester also noted the lining allows feathers to poke through more readily than expected, raising minor durability concerns. Overall, it is widely regarded as a well-rounded, good-value winter bag for trekking and mountaineering, but not the warmest option in its weight class.
